5 Habits to live a less stressful life starting today

Let’s face it, being a business owner doesn’t help if you want to live a less stressful life. It’s like riding a roller coaster, one day you are at the top of your game, feeling like you can conquer any goal…the next one you feel tired and don’t even know how you got yourself in that mess. Ring any bells? Trust me, we all go through this.

Between social media, blogging, networking and on top of that managing your personal life, it’s truly overwhelming. Creating habits that let you live a less stressful life is key to being productive and happy. Well, let’s talk about 5 habits you can cultivate starting today.

01. Create a routine that works for You

The key word in this step is YOU. There are countless productivity related articles out there that highlight the recipe for success: wake up early, eat at this time of the day, work out in the morning and so on. While this might work for some people, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for you.

Whenever I read those articles I kind of feel guilty for doing things differently. Does that happen to you too? It’s important to understand that everyone is different. For example, I find that my most creative ideas always come at night just when I’m about to go to bed. Sometimes I even wake up in the middle of the night and have to write whatever comes to mind right that second.

Sure, I don’t get up get to work at that exact moment, but I always have a notepad close to my bed to write all my ideas down. The same thing happens with working out, I always feel better doing so in the late afternoon. Morning workouts are just not my thing. But others might feel too energized if they work out too close to their sleeping time, and that’s completely fine!

Forcing yourself to fit into a specific routine that doesn’t come naturally to you certainly doesn’t help you live a less stressful life. Find the recipe that makes you feel productive and stick to it.

02. Meditate

Ok, this is a popular recommendation these days for living a less stressful life and I have to admit I need to be more consistent with it as well. But the times when I’ve actually make time to meditate I feel truly different.

There are so many benefits for meditating: you are more focused throughout the day, you learn how to handle everyday stressful situations better, you enhance the mind-body connection and so on.

The best part is that this doesn’t need to be a big deal, you don’t need 1 hour or more. With apps such as Headspace is easy to take 5 minutes on your own and make it happen.

03. Take a break from social media

Oh, the horror! How can you even do this? Trust me, you can…let me correct this, you have to! Yes, being a business owner or blogger is all about being present on social media and engaging with your audience, but this also means you are spending a considerable part of your day checking your Instagram or Twitter.

Not only can this hurt your eyes, but you might be missing on what’s out there. This can lead to burnout and that’s not a fun place to be.

Take a short break from social media when you can. It can be during the weekend, a few hours while you go out shopping or are hanging out with your friends. Just unplug for a while, I promise you won’t regret it.

04. Track your habits progress

Yes, this one might be a bit control freak but hear me out. Whenever you set a new habit or goal you want to conquer, it’s easier and in a way more intentional if you track the progress you make.

If you only have it in the back of your head, you will most likely forget it or feel more stressed later on because you didn’t actually follow through. There are great apps these days such as Strides that help you keep a record of your habits and routine.

You can set new goals such as read every day or work out and see how well you perform all year long.

05. Don’t be too hard on yourself

The truth is we are our own worst critics. For some reason I can’t explain sometimes we can be very critical of our own path and progress. Don’t forget to take a step back each time you feel the stress rising and realize how much you’ve achieved.

Even if you still have a long way to go or things didn’t turn out as well as you imagined, you are doing the best you can. Learn how to be kind to yourself and practice it every day.
